What is access control and what does it mean to the University of Georgia? Access control is the practice of restricting entrance to a property, a building, or a room to authorized persons. Basically, access control enables you to control who has access to your buildings. At the University of Georgia we have chosen to go with an electronic access control system to create a more efficient and secure environment. Yes, locks and keys allow you to secure your building and they serve as great option, but when keys are lost or stolen the inconvenience and expense of changing locks and re-issuing keys can be considerable. Keys may also be copied which can create an even greater security risk. Electronic access control provides the most efficient and convenient way of securing our building and assets.

Here at UGA, we employ a variety of methods to control who can go in and out of buildings. Some buildings have keypads, biometric hand-print and finger print readers, proximity card readers, mag stripe readers, or a combination of all of these. We have included several pages to help you to understand access control and how it applies to the University of Georgia.

Possession of an UGA ID card in and of itself does not constitute access to a building. Rather, departments within buildings using access control programs will determine an individual’s access to their building. If you enter a door with your UGA Card, no alarm will be set off from the door and the event will be logged. However, your building may also contain motion detectors or glass break detectors as well. Be sure to check with your building access control contact before entering the building after hours.

Facilities Management access control personnel are available from AM – PM M-F and can be contacted via telephone at 706-542-7551 ext. 2 or by emailing accesscontrol@uga.edu.
